TN Development Corporation celebrates its 14th year of providing the citizens of Columbia, South Carolina with quality affordable rental housing! TNDC is a non-profit corporation formed by Mayor Robert D. Coble and the members of City Council to create quality-housing opportunities for the residents along with Two Notch Corridor what is known today as Highway US1. As a 501 (c) 3 non-profit affiliate of the City of Columbia, the TNDC is responsible for the development of residential projects.
2007 was a very busy for the professional staff of TN Development Corporation. There have been new projects as well as accomplishments. Living by our mission, of providing and advocating quality affordable housing, blended with the innovative and comprehensive support services, this past year we lived our mission through the communities of Forest Oaks, Oak Hill, Byrnes Place, Ensor Forest and the newly built Arbor Hill! As of November 14, 2006, TNDC had taken on the management of Bethel Bishop Chappelle Apartments (BBC) located off of Ripplemeyer Avenue. We are working to improve the quality of life at the BBC apartments. Keep a watchful eye on this community, positive changes are coming!
Our newest development, Arbor Hill Apartments, is a 30-unit townhouse community located at the corners of Covenant and Center Streets in the Midlands Terrace Neighborhood off of Two Notch Road. This community, formerly known as Center Street Apartments, was acquired by TNDC for the purpose of rehabilitating it. However, it was determined after much discussion with architects, the Midlands Terrace Neighborhood Association, the TNDC Board of Directors, and staff, that the community was not fit for rehabilitation and that new construction would be the best option. Arbor Hill blends with the residential character of the neighborhood and is marketed primarily to low- and moderate-income families. It is a high quality, affordable community with access to the many community services provided by TNDC. It represents the power of collaboration and the impact realized when neighborhoods, individuals, and government move forward together.
TNDC and its' P.O.W.E.R. Center received the SC State Housing Achievement Award in 2003 for the services it provides to our residents and the citizens of the City of Columbia. The P.O.W.E.R. Center Provides Opportunities for Work by Empowering Residents through a state of the art technology center that allows students to learn basic computer skills including Internet navigation while emphasizing job search techniques, personal career goal setting, communication, and conflict resolution skills. One success story for the P.O.W.E.R. Center was a student who signed up for classes during Homeless Connect Week. She was living in a shelter and had decided that she was ready to make a change in her life. She attended classes faithfully; and within one month, she became gainfully employed. Not more than a few weeks after that, she moved into her new home at apartment at Oak Hill Apartments!. Her entire outlook on life changed within a matter of weeks, but only after SHE decided that it was time for her to make a difference in her life. We are proud to have been able to provide the resources needed to make positive changes in a person's life.
